Why Energy Drinks Are Destroying Your Gains

By Miguelly · June 2026 · 5 min read

You crack open a can before every shift and tell yourself you need it.

You do not. You are addicted to it. There is a difference.

I drank energy drinks for three years straight. Monster. Red Bull. The 24 oz cans from the gas station cooler. I told myself it was fuel. I told myself I could not survive a 12 hour night shift without it. Both of those statements were lies I sold myself so I did not have to face the truth.

The truth is that energy drinks are robbing your gains.

The Blood Sugar Trap

Here is what happens when you drink one before your shift. Your blood sugar spikes. Your pancreas dumps insulin. Thirty minutes later you crash harder than before you drank it. So you drink another. By the end of the night you have consumed 200 grams of sugar and enough caffeine to wake a horse. Your sleep quality for the next 24 hours is destroyed. Not reduced. Destroyed.

And muscle is built during sleep, not during your workout.

The sugar hides in the fine print. Only 110 calories per serving. But the can is two servings. You just drank 55 grams of sugar and called it fuel. That is not fuel. That is sabotage.

Caffeine Is Not the Problem

Caffeine is not the enemy. I still drink coffee. Black. One or two cups. The difference is control. Energy drinks are engineered to bypass your control. They are designed to make you need the next one. They do not give you energy. They borrow it from tomorrow and charge triple interest.

Shift workers are the perfect target for this trap. You are tired. You are available at hours when healthy options are closed. The vending machine glows at you at 2 AM and promises alertness in a can. You buy the promise because you are too exhausted to question it.

"You are not tired because you lack caffeine. You are tired because you are fighting your biology with chemicals instead of supporting it with discipline."

What It Does to a Shift Worker's Body

Your body is already drained from the schedule. Rotating shifts. Night shifts. Overtime. Your cortisol is chronically elevated. Your circadian rhythm is under constant attack. Adding energy drinks to that cocktail is like throwing gasoline on a fire and calling it heat management.

Every can makes the next workout harder. Every can makes recovery slower. Every can adds visceral fat around your midsection that you blame on age or genetics. It is not your age. It is the liquid sugar you mainline into your bloodstream four nights a week.

The Replacement Protocol

So what do you do instead.

First. Replace the habit. Carbonated water with a splash of zero sugar flavoring gives you the ritual of cracking a can without the chemical payload.

Second. Sleep more aggressively. Not longer. More aggressively. Blackout curtains. Cold room. No phone.

Third. Eat something with protein and complex carbs an hour before your shift instead of drinking calories. Chicken and rice. Eggs and oats. Real fuel.

You will feel worse for three days. That is withdrawal. Not a sign that you actually need the drink. A sign that your body forgot how to generate its own energy. After a week you will feel clearer than you have in years. After two weeks your workouts will hit harder. After a month your sleep will be so deep you will wonder why you ever accepted the insomnia.

Your Move

There are two kinds of shift workers. The ones who accept the vending machine as their nutritionist. And the ones who read the ingredients and realize they are being played.

You do not need a can to survive your shift. You need to stop poisoning the body you are asking to build muscle.

YOUR MOVE.
